From The Roots Of Metal-Workings Essays - Anglo-Saxon Art

From The Roots Of Metal-Workings Essays - Anglo-Saxon Art From the Roots of Metal-Workings The impact of metalworking traditions on the ornamentation of early insular manuscripts cannot be more clear in than in the carpet pages of the Lindisfarne Gospels. This is particularly true when viewing the cross-carpet page introducing Saint Mark's Gospel, as shown on plate 51 of The Lindisfarne Gospels, and comparing that page with the metal-work pieces discovered at the Sutton Hoo ship burial site. In particular, it is in comparing the motifs and designs of the two where the impact is clearly seen. The carpet page has several distinct features, beginning with the pattern which runs throughout most of the page. It is a very complex interwoven pattern of lines in the general shape of a circle. Each individual shape can be divided into three rough sections. The three sections of the individual shape consists of a half-circle design at the "bottom" of the shape, and two smaller quarter circles appearing on the top "corners" of the shape. This curvilinear pattern repeats itself upwards of thirty times throughout the page and each shape is connected appearing as one long pattern. This particular ornament can be easily traced to the metal-work's of Sutton Hoo. This motif of intricate weaving patterns, as found on the carpet page, can be found on many of the pieces discovered on the metal-works of Sutton Hoo. In particular, the curvilinear pattern can be distinctly detected on the enameled circular escutcheon taken from the rim of a hanging bowl at Sutton Hoo, as shown on Place! C in Sutton Hoo Ship Burial: A Handbook. In this escutcheon, the curvilinear pattern is repeated throughout the object and each circular shape is connected to its fellows. In the center of the carpet page there appears a circle with clearly divided cells in squarish step patterns. These geometric patterns are repeated throughout the central circle. This cell pattern motif can be seen to clearly have its roots in the Sutton Hoo collection. In general, the cell motif appears throughout the Sutton Hoo collection and ranges from circular to squarish. However, in particular, this step pattern is quite obviously seen, though of smaller size, in the half of a gold shoulder clasp displayed in plate F of the Sutton Hoo handbook. The shoulder clasp shows geometric shapes with each individual shape consisting of a generally four sided figure. On each side of the figure the step cell pattern can be clearly perceived. Surrounding the circle are four sections where lines in an intricate weaving patterns with no definable shape appear. These lines do not come to any straight edges but continue in a curving pattern throughout the individual section. Embedded within those lines are the heads of a bird with a curved beak. These four sections are incontrovertible evidence that the carpet page's ornament were derived from the tradition of metal-working. To begin with, the weaving pattern with no edges are consistent with the pieces found at Sutton Hoo. Notably, plate E in the Sutton Hoo handbook of the great gold buckle shows this particular ornament. The buckle's patterns come to no definable shape but, exactly like the carpet page, consists of an interweaving curving line pattern. However, it is the bird's head with the curved beak which is the tale-tell sign that the metal-working tradition is the source of this carpet page's ornament. The bird's head is exactly like those bird's heads found at! Sutton Hoo. Take for instance plate 10 in the Sutton Hoo handbook. The metal fittings from a lyre in the middle of this page very clearly show the exact same bird's head as in the carpet page. It is clear that from the curved beak to the round eye with a single dot in it, the bird's heads are frighteningly similar. The comparison is unmistakable. It is clear that the traditions of metal-working found at Sutton Hoo was the most important source of ornamentation for the Lindisfarne Gospels' carpet page. The patterns and motifs are strikingly similar and it is without doubt that the carpet page has firm roots in the metal-working tradition of Sutton Hoo. It is obvious from this example and the examples of Sutton Hoo that time holds no barrier to

Honesty In Contemporary Politics Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Honesty In Contemporary Politics - Essay Example The columnist Charles Blow in his issue has mainly discussed honesty, hypocrisy, and lies of the politicians. He talks mostly about Romney, the Republican nominated candidate for the presidency. He sides with the results of the Gallup poll that surveyed the sentiments of Independents and Republicans about Romney’s chances of re-election. This group surveyed is the group considered least likely to vote a Democrat and therefore the fact that they predict that Romney will lose by 20% of the votes is credible since they go against their biases. Blow’s sources are all credible, which is a clear indication of his commitment to veracity. This shows Charles Blow is unbiased, thus he gets views from all sides. The critical arguments made in the article are those that talk about Romney hypocrisy and dishonesty throughout his campaign trail (Blow). Romney contradicts himself countless times and this clearly shows that Romney was not honest about all the promises he was making. The article on Romney’s son intimated to Vladimir Putin personally, that his father Mitt Romney was intending to keep relations with Russia if elected. Blow states that Romney’s son, Matt, recently traveled to Russia and delivered a message to President Vladimir Putin. Later, Romney contradicts himself by saying he told a Russian known to be able to deliver messages to Mr. Putin. As a result of these contradictions, it’s unclear if the message actually got to Mr. Putin. This also does not give us actual evidence of whether Romney’s son actually intimated to the president of Russia. However, the article does accurately represent the state electorate before the United States 2012 elections (Blow). Charles Blow writes another column â€Å"The G.O.P fact vacuum.†

Hul and Nirma Company Full Year of Comparison Essay Example for Free

Hul and Nirma Company Full Year of Comparison Essay The success of Nirmas umbrella branding strategy has led to a change in the competitions marketing strategies, as well. Many of Nirmas competitors are now consolidating their brand portfolio and consequently gaining more bang for their advertising rupee. In a changing market environment, the company has relaunched Nirma Yellow Washing Powder and Nirma Beauty Soap, two of its strongest brands. Nirma Yellow Powder is being re-launched with improved formulation and new advertising. This is an extension of the original ad which will return after the launch is over. Nirma Beauty Soap is being re-launched with a new shape, fragrance and a smarter, brighter pack to improve shelf visibility. Promotion Nirmas success is synonymous with its advertising and marketing strategy. When Karsanbhai Patel started selling his detergent powder, he decided to call it Nirma, derived from the name of his daughter Nirupama. In the early years, the Nirma packet featured a lady washing a garment. Later, however, the design was changed and an image of his daughter was featured on the pack. The white dancing girl, featured in Nirmas television advertising, is perhaps the most enduring image of Nirma. Though Ms. Patel passed away in a car accident, she continues to live on in the corporate logo and the best selling brands of the company. Nirmas advertising has always focused on the value-for-money angle. Its simple and catchy jingle Dudh si safedi Nirma se aye, rangin kapda bhi khil khil jaye has continued to echo in the drawing rooms of middle-class Indian homes through the decades. While the jingle stresses on the product, it also salutes the savvy and budget-conscious Indian housewife. The jingle, which was first aired on radio in 1975, was broadcast on television in 1982. It is one of the longest running jingles and the spot has seen very few changes since the time it was first aired. For the re-launch of Nirma, the company has developed new spots but they are variations of the old favourite. Once the re-launch is complete, the company plans to go back to the original advertisement. Nirmas promotion strategy, too, has many firsts to its credit. The company pioneered product sponsorship through the electronic media. Besides, the company has developed a unique advertising strategy new products are launched with no advertising support. Once the distribution glitches are sorted out and the product reaches the shelves of retailers, the company begins to advertise it. The umbrella branding strategy helps to give new products instant recall without increasing the advertising expense.

Domestic Violence: A Family’s Dirty Little Secret :: Violence Against Women Essays

Domestic violence is an ancient problem. The mere mention of it today as an ongoing crisis should make our society embarrassed. Only within the past decade is our society beginning to realize that we have turned a blind eye to domestic violence. All along we’ve been viewing domestic violence as merely a moral and ethical dilemma. We’ve convinced ourselves that it was a private family matter and not a criminal act. We have told ourselves that some women deserve it, or perhaps they provoked it to happen. We excuse ourselves from the problem, into an uncomfortable but yet acceptable, part of our culture and convinced ourselves it was acceptable to look the other way. So while we were looking the other way, here’s what has developed. Battering is the single major cause of injury to women...more than injuries cause by muggings, rape, and car accidents combined. It is the second leading cause of death to women age twenty to forty-five. Strangers perpetrate Twenty percent of violent crimes. More than half are committed by the person's partner. Research has shown that 36 to 50 percent of American women will be abused in their lifetime. Women and girls sometimes abuse men and boys, but nine out of ten victims are girls or women (Shannon 11). Domestic violence is not only limited to women though, it has been leaking into high school and college relationships. â€Å"It is now estimated that at least one out of three high school and college-aged youth experience abuse at some points in their relationships. It can range from a single episode to chronic abuse† (Shannon 24). Even more teens will face verbal or emotional abuse during a relations hip, and 10 to 25 percent of girls between the ages of 15 and 24 will be the victims of rape or attempted rape ((Shannon 18). According to a 2008 survey conducted by the Massachusetts Department of Education, 18 percent of females in grades 9 through 12 reported being hurt physically or sexually by a date ((Shannon 35). We use to see this problem as only belonging to families on the lowest of the socioeconomic ladder. Domestic abuse occurs across all economic, religious, racial and ethnic backgrounds.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Women who are subjected to abuse need to understand that they are not the ones at fault. Guys who do this have serious issues. Things like this don’t just come along. They are either learned or brought on by their own insecurities.

International Business: Globalisation and Its Challenges Essay

Introduction In this essay, I will be focusing and discussing on major challenges faced an international business due to differences in culture at the country or region the business is or was operating. For this essay, I have identified Best Buy Co Inc as one international business and a case study that had faced major challenges in their operations in the United Kingdom. Due to the major cultural challenges faced by Best Buy Co Inc, they had since ceased their operations in the United Kingdom and their venture there is deemed as unsuccessful. Best But Co. Inc was incepted in 1996 in the United States of America. It is a leading multi-channel worldwide retailer and technology product and services developer. In 2010, Best Buy forayed in to the United Kingdom with a joint venture with UK-based mobile phone retailer, Carphone Warehouse after a 50% purchase of The Carphone Warehouse’s retail division. As the world is plunged into a recession during that period, Best Buy’s initial plan t o enter the market in 2009 was pushed back and it seems like they had ran into trouble even before they started. Body Best Buy failed due to a few major challenges that they faced during their venture in United Kingdom. To name a few, they entered the market in United Kingdom when the world is experiencing a recession. They are also overly ambitious in aiming to establish over 200 megastores in the United Kingdom and they faced major challenges in the shopping culture of the English consumers and the far-flung locations of their megastores play a part in their failure too. When Best Buy enters the United Kingdom market in 2009, much of Europe is experiencing and is affected by a recession. While the British pound is still one of the strongest financial economies in the world, they are still nonetheless affected by the recession in Europe. It is understandable that when a recession hits, consumers tends to go easy on their spending. Being a giant American electronic retailer, Best Buy’s venture into United Kingdom during a time of recession will indefinitely affect their businesses. Consumers will be more wary of how they will spend their money. It is not everyday that you need to buy a new television set or refrigerator. It is this lack of foresight on Best Buy’s part that leads to their failure in United Kingdom. Best Buy fails to see that the recession in Europe will affect the economy of United Kingdom. As its neighbour suffers the brunt of recession, United Kingdom will certainly feel its effect too. In United Kingdom, about 42% of all adult employees are provisioned for occupational pension. Recession has affected the people’s attitudes to savings and their ability to save. Two fifths of people in United Kingdom, which is about 41%, can only save little for their retirement due to the economic downturn. Nearly a third, 32%, of people in United Kingdom with a pension and not retired believe the economic downturn has affected the size of their pension pot to a great extent, and 18% say the recession has put retirement lower on their list of priorities. The management of Best Buy fails to identify this economic and savings culture of the people of United Kingdom and it contributed to their failure in their venture there. When people have fewer saving, they will realign their priorities. They will me more wary of their spending and will try to save as much as possible. They need not get a new television set or refrigerator and would rather save the money for rainy days. When Best Buy enters the UK market, they are already having two major electronic retailers, Dixons Retail and Comet Group. These names has been synonymous to the people of UK and are having for more number of stores in the UK as compared to Best Buy’s 11 ‘Big Box’ stores which are located in out of town locations. The management of Best buy should have considered these factors of local competitors and understand the approach that should be taken before entering the market in UK. The market for electrical in UK is already small enough for two local retail giants, what more with a third retailer from abroad? Comet and Dixon are already finding it difficult to thrive, let alone an external brand like Best Buy. These are the type of signs and pointers the management of Best Buy should look into even before they enter the UK market for electrical retailer. They should take note of the size of their prospective competitors should they enter the market and understand how they can make a difference in the electrical market in UK. Rapid technological changes and developments have also changed the way people in United Kingdom shopped. As a lot of electronic shopping moved online, so does the shopping habit of United Kingdom’s customers . Best Buy made a mistake of adopting a strategy in locating its large outlets in out of town and out of the way locations. Being a new business that is not of local origin, this mistake has made the brand more obscure. Best Buy would have to make a huge marketing effort just to make customers head down to their stores. And with the emergence and ease of online shopping, this strategy adopted by Best Buy just puts the customers off. They would rather make purchases online given the convenience of it, rather than making the long journey down to the stores when prices of fuel have also increased. There are also too few Best Buy stores in the UK as compared to its local competitors. Dixon has over 600 stores while Comet has some 250 stores as compared to Best Buy’s 11 which are in out of town location. Due to this, they are unable to create an impact to the electric retail market. Another reason why Best Buy fails in UK is due to its brand recognition. Being a foreign brand name, Best Buy must create a good sense of brand awareness for its business in UK. There are reports that some consumers in UK think that Best Buy is a grocer retailer instead of its nature of business, which is electric. Its brand awareness was not spread rapidly. This is perhaps due to the simple fact that that people do not go to an electric store everyday or week as compared to a supermarket for instance. Why would anyone want to get a television set every week, as compared to someone’s need to purchase groceries for consumption? Even advertising did not help for Best Buy. An actor narrated the adverts with an American accent leading consumers in UK to comment on why the brand is so American. This comment just proves to show how ignorant the marketing department of Best Buy is wen trying to market the brand in the UK. These are some of the problems identified that has contributed to the failure of Best Buy in the UK. In my opinion, it is mostly due to the lack of foresight by the management of Best Buy and their failure to address these shortcomings before they enter the electric retailer market in the UK. With better foresight and understanding of the cultures in UK by the management, Best Buy might not have failed in its business venture in the UK.

Bailout Plan

The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008, enacted on October 3, 2008, is a law that gives the United States Secretary of the Treasury authority to spend $700 billion to buy mortgage-backed securities from the banks. The law aims to purchase these so-called bad assets and hopefully restore confidence to the credit market. The law is more commonly known as the â€Å"bailout† since it intends to rescue the major financial institutions of the US from the subprime mortgage crisis that had reached its tipping point by September 2008.The idea was originally conceived by President George W.  Bush and Henry Paulson, Secretary of the Treasury. Although it is already approved, the plan met several criticism. The main criticism is its effect on the general economy of the United States. For one, the bailout would mean an increase in the US budget for 2009 which already stands at $3. 1 trillion. This would also mean that the annual budget deficit of the US would further increase a nd may exceed $1 trillion. The bailout is also criticized because it implies that the mistake made by the banks would now be shouldered by American taxpayers.Majority of surveys conducted showed that the American public opposed the bailout saying that it was wrong for the government to use taxpayer's money to save the banks which caused the problem in the first place. It is interesting to note that the proposal was not only opposed by the public but also by economists and investors. Another problem of the law is the assumption that the securities bought by the government may increase in value sometime in the future and could be sold for a profit. This is a rather big assumption since there is in fact no assurance that it come true. While the bailout may have helped investor confidence and temporarily stop the decline of the US economy, its true effect will likely be felt sometime in the near future. The bailout is still a short-term solution to a possible long-term problem. If the US economy intends to recover from this crisis, it should study the alternatives proposed and see if it is feasible to implement them.

Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) Training

Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) Training The Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) credential is usually the first Microsoft title earned by certification seekers– but it’s not for everybody. Here’s what you need to know: MCP Is the Easiest Microsoft Credential to Obtain The MCP title only requires passing a single test, normally an operating system test like Windows XP or Windows Vista. That means it takes the least amount of time and money to get. That does not mean, however, that it’s a breeze. Microsoft tests a lot of knowledge, and it will be difficult to pass the exam without some time in a helpdesk or network environment. The MCP Is for Those Who Want to Work on Windows Networks There are other Microsoft certifications for those who want to work in other areas of IT: for example, databases (Microsoft Certified Database Administrator – MCDBA), software development (Microsoft Certified Solutions Developer – MCSD) or high-level infrastructure design (Microsoft Certified Architect – MCA).If your goal is to work with Windows servers, Windows-based PCs, end users and other aspects of a Windows network, this is the place to start. Gateway to Higher-Level Certifications The MCP is often the first stop on the road to the Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA) or Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) credentials. But it does not have to be. Plenty of folks are happy to get the single certification and have no need, or desire, to move up. But the upgrade path to the MCSA and MCSE is easy, since the test you have to pass will count toward the other titles.Since the MCSA requires passing four tests, and the MCSE takes seven, getting the MCP will a) Get you that much closer to your goal and b) Help you decide if this type of certification, and career, is for you. It Leads Most Often to an Entry-Level Job Hiring managers often look for MCPs to work on a corporate helpdesk. MCPs also find jobs in call centers, or as first-tier support technicians. In other words, it’s a foot in the door to a good IT career. Don’t expect IBM to hire you as a system administrator after waving your MCP paper in someone’s face.Especially in a tough economy, IT jobs can be scarce. But having a Microsoft certification on your resume can help give you an edge over non-certified candidates. A prospective employer knows you have a base level of knowledge, and the drive to gain knowledge of your prospective, or current, field. The Average Pay Is High According to the latest salary survey by respected website mcpmag.com, an MCP can expect a salary of around $70,000. That’s not bad at all for a single-test certification.Keep in mind that those figures take many factors into account, including years of experience, geographic location and other certifications. If you’re a career-changer and getting your first job in IT, your salary will quite likely be substantially less than that.Consider all these factors when deciding whether or not to go for the MCP title. MCPs are well-respected in IT shops, and have skills that can help them on their way to lucrative, satisfying careers.
